KS4 Computer Science

For Computer Science, we will achieve our curriculum vision by ensuring: That UTC Leeds Computer Science students are able to think algorithmically, by identifying the sequence of steps required to perform a particular task and to be able to write computer programs to automate a solution.

Curriculum Intent

At UTC Leeds, we believe that computer science is a practical, creative, and deeply applied subject. Our core philosophy is this: all theoretical concepts should be explored through practical experience.

Students actively write and test code, they do not just learn about computer science theory. This approach helps students develop a deep understanding of how systems work, while preparing them with the skills needed for further study and careers in the  technology sector.

Our curriculum is designed to develop full-stack technical literacy, giving students experience across programming, web technologies, databases, and computer systems alongside the academic knowledge required for success in GCSE Computer Science (AQA 8525).

A Holistic Approach to Learning

By working across multiple languages and technologies, students begin to understand:

  • How programming concepts transfer between languages
  • How different technologies combine to form complete systems
  • How theory underpins everything from simple scripts to complex applications

By the end of Year 10, students will have experience across a broad technical stack, including Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, C# and SQL, developing confidence as adaptable problem-solvers.

Course Overview

Students who choose GCSE Computer Science at UTC Leeds follow two complementary strands in Year 10:

1. GCSE Computer Science (AQA 8525)

This strand focuses on the core theoretical and programming knowledge required for success in the GCSE qualification.

Students learn to:

  • Think computationally and solve problems using algorithms
  • Write structured, efficient programs using Python
  • Understand how computers represent data in binary (including text, images and sound)
  • Explore computer systems and hardware architecture
  • Explore networks, cybersecurity, and databases

Python is used as the primary language to teach core programming principles.

 

2. Applied Computing & Technical Development (Enhanced UTC Offer)

In addition to their GCSE lessons, students benefit from additional timetabled sessions in Year 10 focused on project-based learning. This allows them to see how the concepts from their GCSE studies are applied in real-world contexts, reinforcing understanding and increasing engagement.

In these lessons, students:

  • Build interactive websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Develop applications and games using C#
  • Work with SQL databases and integrate them into applications
  • Explore server setup and virtualisation, including Linux environments
  • Gain experience of networked systems including building multiplayer gaming applications

Consolidation and Specialisation

In Year 11, students develop their programming by writing code that is reusable, and easier to maintain, by:

  • Applying programming skills to longer more complex problems
  • Using subroutines and parameter passing to create modular programs

Alongside programming, students expand their understanding of how computer systems operate by studying:

  • Digital electronics, applying logic gates to construct circuits such as a 2-bit binary adder
  • Assembly language, giving insight into how software interacts directly with hardware
  • Computer network architecture, explored through practical simulation using tools such as Cisco Packet Tracer to configure routers and firewalls across LAN and WAN environments

High-attaining students may have opportunities to extend their programming experience through C#, bridging the gap between GCSE programming and the object-oriented techniques encountered in further study and industry.
