For Design and Technology, we will achieve this by ensuring: That all UTC Leeds students are work-ready, developing a range of technical and employability skills that will make them sought after in the region.

Purpose: Prepares students to thrive in a technological world, essential for future engineers.

Learning Focus:

  • Influences: Historical, social, cultural, environmental, and economic factors.
  • Creative Work: Opportunities to design and make creatively, applying technical and practical skills.

Curriculum Structure:

  • Non-Negotiables: Key areas to master, forming the foundation of learning.
  • Sequenced Learning: Coherent 4-year plan, integrated across subjects, focusing on developing competency and mastery.

This curriculum ensures students gain the skills and knowledge needed for success in Design and Technology.

Design and Technology

Exam board: AQA

Year 10

  • Materials: Study a wide range of materials including papers, boards, timber, metals, polymers, and textiles.
  • Design Principles: Learn about design principles and their impact on users and the world.
  • Project Work: Engage in design and make projects to develop practical skills and create functioning prototypes.

Year 11

  • Iterative Design Challenge: Complete a major project worth 50% of the qualification, focusing on exploring needs, creating solutions, and evaluating outcomes.
  • STEM Integration: Apply mathematical and scientific knowledge to design engineering.
  • Examination: The other 50% of the qualification is assessed through a 2-hour exam covering core and in-depth design and technology principles.

This curriculum ensures students gain comprehensive skills in design and technology, preparing them for future careers in STEM fields.
