UTC Leeds graduate, Melissa Smith - Student Stories - UTC Leeds

We caught up with 19-year-old Melissa Smith, a former UTC student who’s recently started her Mechanical Engineering degree following her foundation year at Northumbria University.

Melissa joined the UTC in Year 12 for Sixth Form where she studied Engineering, Computer Science, Physics and Maths. She said: “When I first came to the UTC I thought I wanted to do computer science at university but being here made me realise I wanted to go down the engineering path more.”

Since leaving the UTC in 2019, Melissa has completed her foundation year in Engineering and has now started the first year of her degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Melissa believes her time at the UTC prepared her for the future. She said: “The UTC definitely prepared me for university in ways that a ‘normal’ school couldn’t – such as working on projects with some of the businesses connected with the school and actually focusing on engineering and STEM subjects.”
