Sixth form student Rosanna Osei is ambitious, looking ahead to studying engineering at first choice University of Birmingham. Rosanna joined UTC Leeds in Year 10 and gained a Grade 9 GCSE in Italian this summer, alongside her engineering technical qualification and other GCSEs.
Rosanna joined the UTC because she felt it offered her opportunities that other schools could not: “I like to do more practical and technical things, and the UTC was offering use of equipment that they don’t have in other schools. I want to become an engineer.
“I realised I wanted to become an engineer when we did Design Technology in Year 9 at school, I really enjoyed it.”
Rosanna thinks that engineering is a good subject choice for anyone: “Everywhere you go there is a need for engineers and there are so many different types of engineering, even here. I’m thinking about mechanical engineering, but that may change.
“I’d say to other young women who are good at science and maths, they should have a go at engineering because you can change subject if you want to, but I think they are really going to enjoy it.”
Rosanna has progressed into sixth form at the UTC to study double engineering, applied science and maths.
“Being at UTC is more like being at work, they treat you like young adults and they have expert teachers. Because it’s a small school everyone is like a family.
“I made really good new friends here that I wouldn’t have made.”
