Meet Our Alumni: David Wilkinson - Student Stories - UTC Leeds

David Wilkinson is looking forward to taking the next steps in his engineering career at the prestigious University of Sheffield where he will study mechatronics and robotic engineering – an area of industry that is growing rapidly.

The department where David will be studying at the university, the Department of Control and Systems Engineering, is the only one in the UK and reputed to be the best in Europe. Graduates from the course have gained positions in top international companies such as BMW and Dyson.

David said, “I’m very happy with my results, especially my further maths. I got A*. I also got an A* in maths, A in computer science and A in physics.”

David joined the UTC in Year 12 aged 16 in order to specialise in engineering: “I thought this was the best place industry-wise and to get a feel for the different types of engineering available. If you want to go down the engineering path, I think it’s much better than going to a normal sixth form. Also, I feel that you get treated like an adult here.”

David studied engineering, computer science, maths and further maths, but in the second year he swapped engineering for physics. In addition to coursework at the UTC, he also met employers and enjoyed work experience.

He commented: “I got some good industry links through the course. For example, I went on work experience to Sound Leisure, where we were renovating an old juke box built in the ‘80s.

He added: “If you want a strong base in maths and science or want to do engineering then definitely come to the UTC.”
