Tom Oakley has progressed to a Degree Apprenticeship with Inspec Solutions following his KS5 studies at UTC Leeds.
“I’ve started a degree apprenticeship in control systems engineering at Inspec Solutions in Sheffield. I’m loving it down here in Sheffield and it’s exactly what I’ve had my eyes set on for the last three years.”
Inspec Solutions have been developing technology and safety systems for industries including food and beverage, manufacturing, energy, upstream and downstream oil and gas, metals and national infrastructure for over 20 years.
Tom is currently working with a team on a project for an independent Anglo-French oil and gas company called Perenco. He joined as the team were designing the electrical schematics, he said: “I quickly got myself involved due to my previous experience with using autoCAD at UTC Leeds.
“One month down the line and I am now heavily involved in the move from designing the schematics to building and testing hardware – this includes uploading and testing programs which are valuable skills learned both at the UTC and my time in the industry.”
Tom believes his time at the UTC prepared him well for his apprenticeship. He said, “There are a lot of skills and technical applications which I have been able to transfer from my time at the UTC to the work place.
“I think, had I studied anywhere else, I wouldn’t have been as prepared as I was going into this apprenticeship.
“Thank you to the staff at the UTC for shaping me up ready to go into the big world and move forward with my career!”
