Harvey, a Year 13 student at the UTC, has been working on a rocket project for his Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
An EPQ is equivalent to half an A level, students may choose their own topic, as long as they show that it is academically useful – either related to their current course or future career.
He said: “I am working on my EPQ, in which I am making a model rocket that contains systems inspired by recent developments in the aerospace industry with regards to reusable rockets. This means that my rocket will contain a control system which moves the engine so that it stays on a straight trajectory – even without fins!
“I am also going to develop the flight computer to attempt to propulsively land the rocket. This engine test proved that the Thrust Vector Control system could survive the forces from the engine. Another test will be completed after Christmas to check that the system will remain intact whilst it is moving the engine!”
