Over 250 UTC Leeds’ staff and students attended the UK’s largest skills, apprenticeships and careers event on 16 November at the NEC Birmingham.
Exhibitors included global brands like Airbus, BMW, Coca-Cola, HS2, Royal Mail and Toyota. A combination of have-a-go activities, careers advice, talks and skills demonstrations alongside a major exhibition of big employers with apprenticeship opportunities gave the UTC students plenty to explore.
A partnership between businesses, education and government, the organisation behind WorldSkills UK Live aims to help young people go further and faster in their careers, gaining the skills that employers need most.
Steve Davison, Head of Engineering at UTC Leeds, said: “WorldSkills UK was an inspirational event for the students. They were able to ask about a huge range of apprenticeship opportunities and find out what these apprenticeships actually involve, as well as how to apply. They also got to see all sorts of skills demonstrations ranging from CNC Turning to Welding to Carpentry.”
Two UTC students in Year 10 and Year 12 came away with an added bonus, winning work experience placements with Coca-Cola at their Wakefield plant.
The whole UTC Leeds student party also made their mark, as Steve explained: “I was told by three different companies that our students were the best presented and behaved group in the whole of WorldSkills UK – which was quite an accolade.”
