UTC Leeds students Compete in National Maths competition - UTC Leeds

14th November 2018

A team of four students from the sixth form at UTC Leeds is taking part in a major Maths challenge tonight.

The Senior Team Maths Challenge is run by the UK Mathematics Trust in partnership with the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme. It tests mathematical, communication and teamwork skills in students from Years 11, 12 and 13. Students compete in teams of four with no more than two students from Year 13.

Heats are currently being run all around the country. The Leeds heat is being held on 14th November at the University of Leeds. The UTC is fielding a team of two Year 12 and two Year 13 students picked from the Further Maths’ groups.

Teams from each school go head to head in different challenges including a group round where they work together to get as many correct answers as possible, a relay race where their answers are used for the next question, and a crossword round with one pair having the across clues and the other pair the down clues.

Head of Maths, David Hayter, said, “We haven’t put a team in for this before, so are really looking forward to it. Again it gets students to use their skills in problem solving activities where accuracy and speed are both vital.”

The current competition builds on a competition held at the UTC earlier in November where around 50 Maths and Further Maths A-level students took part in a Senior Maths Challenge. Competitors.
