Standing room only at the UTC Leeds open event - UTC Leeds

23rd October 2018

Families from across Leeds City Region gathered at UTC Leeds on Thursday 18th October to find out about securing a place at the UTC in Year 10 or Year 12 starting from September 2019.

Employer partners who regularly support the UTC were present showcasing their activities, including University of Leeds, AGFA, Braime, Leeds Welding Company and Sound Leisure. Parents and potential applicants were able to talk to employers and find out how they work with the UTC and what they are looking for in new recruits.

The UTC specialises in engineering and manufacturing, offering students the opportunity to train on industry-standard equipment. Engineering displays included Pneumatics and VEX robotics, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Green Power and digital welding. For those interested in Computer Science, there was a games programming workshop, ‘Face Invaders’, whilst the keen mathematicians had a treasure hunt and an opportunity to gather and interpret live stats from the event.

Visitors to the Science rooms could see current UTC students making standing waves, doing flame tests and dissections, and showing a Hydrogen fuel cell car and elephants’ toothpaste, to name but a few.

Families had a chance to tour the UTC and to hear the Principal in the main lecture theatre, which is like a university lecture hall.  At the Principal’s talk, there was standing room only.

Vice Principal, Emily Devane, said: “We are delighted to see so many families interested in what the UTC has to offer for their son or daughter. We are the only college in Leeds that specialises in engineering where students can study GCSEs and A Levels alongside highly regarded technical qualifications in engineering.

She continued: “Our focus on seven employability skills drives everything that we do here, to prepare our students for high quality careers.  We can already see the impact this has in the destinations that our first graduates have achieved, progressing into university places and sought-after apprenticeships.”

Places are now open in Year 10 and Year 12 to enter the UTC in September 2019. To express interest in a place and find out how to apply, please visit: https://www.utcleeds.co.uk/apply/
