UTC Leeds’ first students are celebrating a good set of GCSE results.
At UTC Leeds, on Sayner Road, Hunslet, students study GCSEs alongside technical qualifications.
A total of 86 students sat GCSE exams this summer. Of these 62.8% achieved a Grade 4 (low C grade equivalent) or above in Maths and 51% achieved a Grade 4 or above in English.
In Triple Science, 100% of students obtained Grade 4 or above in Physics, 91.3% in Biology and 95.5% in Chemistry.
A significant number of students are remaining at UTC Leeds to study A level and technical courses next year. In addition, students are progressing to a range of college courses and high quality apprenticeships at major employers such as: ATB Morley, CEG, Jaguar Landrover, Siemens, Skoda and Wright Group. In total, 20% of students are going on to Level 3 (Advanced) and Level 4 (Higher) apprenticeships.
Emily Devane, Acting Principal, UTC Leeds, said: “It is fantastic to see our first cohort of students celebrate their GCSE results. I’d like to congratulate them on their success, wish them well for the future and thank our staff and employers for their incredible commitment and support.
“It’s also very rewarding to see so many of our students progressing onto advanced and higher level apprenticeships, providing the skills that our economy needs to grow and fulfilling the original vision of University Technical Colleges.”
UTCs are government funded technical schools that have been established to provide technical learning opportunities in partnership with employers and universities.
They provide academic and technical qualifications for 14 to 19-year-olds to match the skills needs of regional employers, supporting economic growth and employment.
The £10 million UTC Leeds specialises in advanced engineering and manufacturing, and opened in September 2016.
Students are able to join the UTC at the age of 14 in Year 10 or 16 in Year 12 and can complete technical qualifications alongside GCSEs and A Levels
