A-Grade Student Harry Celebrates Academic and Technical Success
Harry Dunbar is celebrating a top set of academic and technical exam results from UTC Leeds.
The 18-year-old has achieved three A Levels in maths, further maths and physics at grades A*, A* and A as well as an A grade in the extended project qualification.
He also completed a technical qualification in engineering achieving a distinction*. Harry is going on to study a Degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds, which is among the top 100 in the world for engineering and technology.
Harry said: “I’m really happy with my grades. I chose UTC Leeds because of further maths being on the curriculum, which was a big draw.”
He added: “It’s great that you can study technical qualifications as well as A Levels. That approach at the UTC has really helped me to develop academic and theoretical knowledge as well as technical skills relevant to industry.”
Harry continued: “We’ve also learned how to problem solve and work in teams on the coursework projects. I wasn’t worried about moving schools as I enjoy meeting new people. It was a leap of faith signing up to a brand new school but it has been worth it.”
Mitchell Is A UTC Leeds Trailblazer
Mitchell Cottam is one of the first students to successfully complete their studies at UTC Leeds.
The 18-year-old has achieved two A Levels in maths and physics at grades A and C and a technical qualification in engineering gaining double distinction*.
He also took the extended project qualification and achieved an A* grade where he designed and made a CNC combined router and 3D printer.
Mitchell said: “I’m very happy with my grades. I’ve always been really interested in engineering. At home, I’ve built my own quadcopter. I chose UTC Leeds because of the specialist courses and facilities.”
He added: “I’m really glad that I joined the UTC, as engineering wasn’t offered at my previous school. It’s been great learning technical skills and meeting new people. Taking the extended project qualification has also helped me to develop independent learning and research skills for university.”
Mitchell is going on to study a Degree in Mechatronics and Robotics at the University of Leeds, which is among the top 100 in the world for engineering and technology.
Casey-Lea Is Inspired To Keep Learning
Casey-Lea Allison wants to develop her engineering skills having enjoyed her course at UTC Leeds.
The 18-year-old has completed a technical qualification in engineering achieving a distinction grade.
She said: “I want to continue engineering, keep studying and make it to university – ideally Leeds Beckett.
“I chose UTC Leeds because I want a career in engineering. The curriculum specialises in that and is strong on design, which I enjoyed, electrical and mechatronics.”
Casey added: “I’ve liked the hands-on learning and the projects with employers. I enjoyed work experience at Sound Leisure.
“The UTC has also shown me what’s possible for future careers. At the moment, boys outnumber girls but it’s been fine studying with lads. The staff are really supportive. I’ve always found them to be very helpful.”
Tom Celebrates Apprenticeship Success With Schneider Electric
Tom Harder is starting a mechanical engineering apprenticeship at Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management and automation with operations in more than 100 countries.
Tom, 18, achieved two A Levels in product design and core maths at grades B and D and a technical qualification in engineering with a distinction* distinction.
He said: “I’m happy with my results. UTC Leeds is a great place to study if you want a career in engineering because of the in-depth theoretical and technical learning and working with the latest equipment and facilities.”
Apprenticeships offer young people the chance to earn as they learn and go up to degree level. Tom will study a Higher National Certificate, a degree level qualification.
Apprentices are paid a wage and usually spend four days a week training in the workplace and one day a week completing a qualification at college or university.
Daniel Secures Degree Apprenticeship At AECOM
Daniel Kaye is celebrating starting a degree apprenticeship at global engineering company AECOM, which has an office based in Leeds.
Daniel achieved one A Level in core maths at grade B, a technical qualification in engineering with a distinction merit and the extended project qualification at a grade B.
He said: “I put a lot of effort in this year and am very glad to get my results. The hard work has paid off.”
Daniel has already started his apprenticeship at AECOM and his training involves looking at flood defences. The qualification is accredited by Leeds Beckett University.
He added: “I’ve really enjoyed studying at UTC Leeds. I’ve had the opportunity to work on curriculum projects set by different engineering employers. That’s really broadened my knowledge as well as technical, team working and problem solving skills that will help me when I go into the workplace.”
Daniel said: “It’s been great learning in new facilities and working with the latest equipment such the computer aided design software. I’ve chosen to go onto an apprenticeship because I want to continue learning in the workplace rather than go to university.”
