UTC Leeds students showed outstanding teamwork at the recent Further Maths Network competition
Year 10 students recently competed against teams from other regional schools in an annual maths competition run by the Further Maths Network. The aim of the annual Maths Feast competition is to encourage more students to get involved with problem solving and take-up Further Maths.
Competing teams took part in 4 rounds: Starter: What no words? involved students being presented with various diagrams to work out missing information. Main: Problem solving round. Practical interlude: Involved students using Mathematics in practical contexts. Dessert: Students had to work out a chain of problems in which they had to make sure their previous answers were correct as this would effect subsequent answers.
UTC Leeds teams won a certificate for great teamwork showing that they could cooperate and discuss their strategies well in the various rounds. They also won Round 3 overall showing they can apply Mathematics to various situations. Horsforth School were the overall winners. Head of Maths, Karla Bennett, said, “All students were great advocates for UTC Leeds, showing maturity and good manners throughout the day.
